Summer in the Library

by Mrs. Good

June 11, 2009

Summer School in the Library

Students attending summer school at Tescott visited their library twice a
week. Mrs. Good provided various reading activities for 3 groups. They all
practiced their reading skills while learning about various animals,
addition facts, monsters, school lunches, and salsa.

The Kindergarteners and 1st graders read a story about salsa. On the last
day of summer school, this group made salsa. They learned about how the
various ingredients of salsa smell, feel, look, and taste. The most
interesting ingredient was cilantro. This was a new plant for most of the
students and they were astonished to learn that they ate the leaves! Also
interesting to them was the fact that when the leaves were cut up they
smelled stronger. Included in their salsa were tomatoes, green peppers,
green onion, lemon, salt, pepper, and cilantro.

All three groups enjoyed eating the delicious salsa and tortilla chips made
by the youngsters. Reading is all around us and provides us with much
information as well as enjoyment. Have a great summer!
