TJH Girls Basketball Takes TLL Tournament

by Coach Facklam

February 01, 2010

The Tescott Junior High Girls Team won the Twin Lakes Tournament with three wins over: Sylvan, Wilson and Marquette.  This followed up their undefeated regular season league schedule.  Our final record was 11 wins versus 1 loss.

The first contest was on Monday, as Tescott defeated Sylvan 36 to 15.  Tescott led at halftime 30 to 0 and then multiple players enjoyed playing and scoring in the second half.

Tescott was led in scoring by Shaelyn Martin with 13 points.  Shiland Fuller scored seven points.  Amber Pickering had six points, Jordyn Shorter had four points.  Kaitlynn King, Loren Herbel, Tesla Madsen all tallied two points apiece.

            Rebound totals:  Jordyn Shorter---6, Shaelyn Martin—4, Makayla Webb—4, Shiland Fuller—3, Tesla Madsen—1, Shay Koch—1.  Assists:  Shaelyn—6, Shiland—1, Amber—1, Briana Hurst—1.  Steals: Shaelyn—9, Shiland—2, Amber—2, Jordyn—1, Tesla—1.

The toughest game in the tournament proved to be Wilson, as Tescott defeated the Dragons 25 to 15.  Late in the third quarter, the game was tied at 12 to 12 until the young Lady Trojans went on a 13 to 3 run to win the game and advance into the championship.  Wilson played a tough defense, and the Lady Trojans were having a difficult time makings shots.

Tescott was led in scoring by Shaelyn Martin with 11 points.  Jordyn Shorter had 6 points, Shay Koch tallied four points.  Shiland Fuller and Amber Pickering scored two points each.

            Rebound totals:  Shaelyn Martin—9, Jordyn Shorter—7, Makayla Webb—2, Amber Pickering—2, Shay Koch—2.  Assists:  Shaelyn—3, Amber—1, Shay—1.  Steals:  Shaelyn—3, Shiland—1, Jordyn—1.

Tescott defeated Marquette 28 to 18 to take the championship.  Tescott got to a torrid start and grabbed a first quarter 10 to 1 lead.  The lead advanced 28 to 12 at the end of the third quarter, and then Tescott relied on its defense to win the game and tournament.

Shaelyn Martin continued to lead the team in scoring with 13 points.  Jordyn Shorter scored seven points, Shiland Fuller had six points and Amber Pickering tallied two points.

            Rebound Totals:  Shaelyn Martin—9, Jordyn Shorter—7, Shay Koch—3, Shiland Fuller—1, Amber Pickering—1, Makayla Webb—1.  Assists:  Shaelyn—5, Jordyn—2, Shiland—1.  Steals:  Shaelyn—3, Shiland—1, Jordyn—1.

“Defense was the key to this successful tournament and season,”  commented Coach Facklam.  “We allowed very few open shots and fewer second chance or break points.  When you don’t give up easy points, winning usually takes place.  We also have six eighth grade girls that understand their roles very well.  When they all did their assignments, we looked very good.  Playing defense, passing, and rebounding are just as important as scoring.  Complements to all of these girls.”

“Special thanks also to Assistant Coach Val Martin.  Val did a great job of aiding this program and running practices when I was absent.  I appreciated her presence as a coach, not just as a mom.”

“Finally thanks to the parents.  Our crowd was huge Saturday, and supported the team well.  They too understood the roles of their daughters and never encouraged them to overstep their boundaries which often leads to conflicts.  It is fun coaching girls when they do not fight with each other on the court.”

Congratulations TJH Basketball!!
