Students have a FAN--tastic time at TABS
August 11, 2008
Students from Bennington and Tescott High Schools attended the Team Action Builds Success (TABS) Summit held August 3-5, 2008, at Rock Springs 4-H Camp. The Summit is sponsored by the Kansas Family Partnership who is granted funds for the Summit by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Total cost of the Summit was around $90,000.
Students who attended were: (Bennington) Garrett Brown, Kaci Copas, Sadie Gantvoort, Josh Hicks, Brody Laflen, Chandler Loomis and Jordan Loomis. (Tescott) Dakota Eidet, Rueben Gonzales, Annie Parker, Jerica Parker and Bailey Walker. Teen Leaders who were selected by the Summit Coordinators to lead small groups during the Summit were Jacob Crawshaw and Megan Crawshaw. Joining school team sponsors Trudy Berthelson and Rosemary Neaderhiser was Warren Cico who attended as an Adult Leader for the Summit.
The Summit has two areas of focus: the reduction of underage drinking as well as encouragement for use of seat belts. Workshops included information about how the brain works, social norms, Safety Belt information, leadership skills, and time to work together as a local team to build an Action Plan for our communities and schools. Pete Bodyk from the Department of Transportation addressed the group regarding statistics and Kiersten Allen, a school librarian, shared her story about being hit by a drunken driver when she was nine years old resulting in permanent damage to her body and the loss of her brother and mother. Bill Cordes provided much entertainment, dancing and information about leadership and choices. As Bill will always say: YOGOWYPI (You Only Get Out What You Put In).
This is the first year that Tescott has formed a team for the Summit. Bennington has attended for the past six years. Please ask the attendees about the Summit. Our teams did a great job of YOGOWYPI and have built some incredible Action Plans.
Special thanks to Dakota Eidet who represented Twin Valley Schools in the Talent Show. Special thanks also to the state agencies that allowed over 250 students across Kansas to be involved in this Summit at no cost to students or their schools.
Please view the slide show for photos of the event.
